Hardware called strain clamps is used to secure wires and sustain their tension. Tension clamps fall into two categories based on various installation scenarios and structural configurations. There are two types of tension clamps: bolt-type and wedge-type. Both types must be able to bear the entire tensile force applied to the conductor, and the clamp's gripping force must equal or exceed 90% of the conductor's rated tensile strength. After installation, this kind of cord clamp can be taken off and reused. The other is a tension clamp, which serves as a conductor in addition to withstanding the wire's full tensile force.

Strain clamps are used to fix conductors and ground wires to different types of insulators or link fittings to tower arms and substation structures. There are two basic systems of strain clamps:
Detachable clamps, such as wedge clamp chain anchoring system, thimbles, bolted type tension clamps, which allow for subsequent adjustment.
Non-detachable clamps, such as compression dead end tension clamp which requires absolute matching to the conductor length.
